Jaxport Adds Two New Cranes to Boost Cargo Capacity

Two new ship-to-shore container cranes have arrived at Jaxport’s , expanding the port’s capacity to handle larger vessels as part of a state-backed modernization push.
The cranes, built by Germany-based Liebherr, were delivered in multiple large components and are being assembled on-site. Once operational by the end of 2025, the 50-gauge cranes will enhance Jaxport’s ability to serve wider ships, with each unit capable of reaching across 19 containers and lifting up to 65 long tons.
A third crane is under construction at Liebherr’s facility in Ireland and is scheduled for delivery in December. It will be deployed at Jaxport’s in early 2026.
The equipment is part of a $53 million investment made possible through state funding provided over the past two years. The cranes also feature regenerative power systems designed to boost energy efficiency by generating electricity while lowering containers, reducing overall emissions during operations.

“We are grateful to Gov. Ron DeSantis, the Florida Legislature and the Florida Department of Transportation for their long-standing support of Florida’s largest container port,” said Jaxport CEO Eric Green in a statement. “The state’s continued investment in world-class transportation infrastructure allows more cargo to move through Jacksonville, supporting jobs and economic growth for our region and the state.”
The port plans to invest an additional $40 million in crane upgrades over the next five years as it continues replacing aging equipment and improving operational efficiency.
The new cranes arrive as Jaxport completes a related upgrade to its Blount Island Marine Terminal: the construction of Berth 22, a roll-on/roll-off cargo berth that expands the port’s ability to serve larger vehicle vessels.

Located in the southeastern U.S., Jaxport is Florida’s busiest container port by volume and one of the top vehicle-handling ports in the country. The port features a 47-foot-deep shipping channel, two-way vessel traffic and offers same-day access to 98 million U.S. consumers via road and rail connections.
