Interstate 10 was closed for several hours at the Alabama-Florida state line after the Florida Panhandle and Alabama Gulf Coast were hit with widespread flooding early Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.

I-10 reopened shortly after 8 a.m. As much as 15 to 20 inches of rain have fallen in Pensacola with a few more inches expected, AP reported.

Several shelters in Alabama opened for evacuees, but with many roads south of I-10 flooded, some people had difficulty traveling. The Alabama Department of Transportation said water covered parts of Alabama 59, the main road for beach-bound tourists.

“We do have a lot of roads that are still underwater,” Glen Brannan, plans and operations officer with ALDOT, told AP, but said things are improving.
