International Truck and Engine Corp. held a press conference at the recent Mid-America Trucking Show to point with pride to — nothing at all.

The “nothing” that was coming out of the exhaust pipe of an International 4900 model dump truck gave the company an opportunity to showcase its “Green Diesel Technology.” The manufacturer has been working on the process since 1989, when it first demonstrated smokeless diesel technology.

But the technique continues to undergo additional refinements in field tests in California as International Truck, formerly Navistar International, and other companies face deadlines for lowering the emission levels in their trucks and engines.

Patrick Charbonneau, vice president of engineering for the Engine Group, took reporters outside the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center on March 23 to where the dump truck was running. He explained the vehicle had an International 530E diesel engine, with a continuously regenerating trap using ultra-low-sulfur fuel. The result was exhaust neither visible nor malodorous emerging from the tailpipe.
