Housing starts fell 2.1% in May, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.

New starts declined to a 1.474 million-unit annual rate from April’s 1.502 million, Commerce said.

The level was slightly higher than economists’ forecasts, Bloomberg reported.

Building permits, an indicator of future construction, rose 3%, Commerce said.
