A Pennsylvania congressman and representatives of the trucking industry called on Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker to block proposed sharp toll increases on seven of the toll bridges linking the state to New Jersey.

“The governor appoints all five of Pennsylvania’s members on the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, which sets the toll rates, so he can and should intervene before these massive toll increases can take effect,” said Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski (D-Pa.) at an Aug. 22 press conference.

Several state lawmakers also attended the event in Delaware Water Gap, Pa.

The toll hikes include a 300% increase for some trucks. The commission approved them in December and they were supposed to take effect in July, but were delayed until a new electronic toll payment system could be installed. The commission has said that system could be in place as early as November.
