General Motors Co. will start operating a Michigan truck plant on Saturdays later this year, adding overtime production to build more of its gas-powered heavy-duty pickups.

The company will run additional hours at its Flint factory starting in June, but doesn’t plan to add more workers, according to a GM spokesman. The plant builds heavy-duty versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups for commercial businesses and individual customers.

The Detroit automaker is boosting production for some of its thirstiest vehicles even as gasoline prices have climbed to around $4 a gallon nationally since the start of the war in Iran. GM, which like many rivals has shifted some production capacity away from electric vehicles in favor of gas-powered models, has said recent fuel price increases have not hurt sales of its largest vehicles.

Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said at an investor conference this month that the company had low inventory on some of its pickup trucks and larger SUVs.

GM shares were little changed at 10:13 a.m. in New York. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported the plant production change.
