Truckers crossing the U.S.-Mexico border at Laredo, Texas, now have an eight-lane, $60 million bridge to ease their trip.

And Laredo citizens jubilantly expect to be relieved of the daily parade of trucks that has snaked through their community for decades.

The World Trade Bridge, the fourth span across the Rio Grande, opened April 15, with Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater delivering the keynote speech at a gala dedication ceremony that included civic leaders from both sides of the river.

The newest span, eight miles north of Laredo, is reserved for cargo crossings only, and to encourage reluctant truckers to use it, the two downtown bridges linking the city with Nueveo Laredo in Mexico will be off limits to commercial vehicles.
