GAO Criticizes Oversight of Enforcement Grants

ecent reports from the Government Accountability Office urged the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to improve its enforcement grant and outreach programs.

GAO said FMCSA agreed to consider GAO鈥檚 recommendations for improving enforcement programs, but disagreed with the findings of a second report that criticized the lack of an apparent connection between FMCSA鈥檚 education programs and strategic objectives.

In a Dec. 15 report, GAO said FMCSA 鈥渇ollows key effective management practices,鈥 but fails to properly gauge how some of its enforcement programs improve large-truck safety.
