FMCSA: CDL Rules Could Take 26,000 Drivers a Year Off Road

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said nearly 26,000 truck drivers could be disqualified every year under the agency’s new commercial driver license rules.

The rules are intended to get drivers convicted of serious violations in either trucks or personal automobiles off the road.

Congress required the FMCSA to improve the way states run their CDL programs. Congress acted after reports that drivers with long driving violation records and license suspensions in one state were able to get CDLs in other states because of state and local governments’ lapses in reporting serious violations.
