A week after Hurricane Floyd marched up the East Coast’s I-95 corridor, some towns and highways in North Carolina remained under water, hampering travel and continuing to disrupt freight service.

Floyd’s torrential rains submerged more than 400 roads. Worst hit was eastern North Carolina, where Interstates 95 and 40 remained closed until Sept. 20, main highways were only partially open as of Sept. 23, and some state roads remained flooded.

Shirley Roebuck, general manager of Marine Freight Co., Portsmouth, Va., said last week that I-95 was handling only one lane of traffic in each direction in parts of North Carolina.
