The Engine Manufacturers Association is hailing an Environmental Protection Agency proposal to require deep reductions in the sulfur cot of diesel fuel.

The proposed rule, under review by the Office of Management and Budget, would lower diesel sulfur levels to between 5 and 40 parts per million by late 2006 or early 2007.

Currently, highway vehicles may use diesel fuel containing up to 500 ppm of sulfur — diesel fuel used in off-highway vehicles may range up to 5,000 ppm.

“You can’t have a better emissions standard without better diesel fuel,” said Glenn Keller, executive director of the EMA.
