The Department of Transportation unveiled its long-awaited overhaul of the federal hours of service regulations Tuesday afternoon at a Washington, D.C., press conference.

The proposal for long-haul and regional drivers, based on 24 hours, will allow 14 hours of work, with 10 consecutive off-duty hours and two hours of break time.

DOT also proposed requiring drivers to have a at least two consecutive nights off a week and the use of onboard devices on to record hours of service.

The proposal includes schemes to cover long-distance drivers, those working for regional carriers, local drivers with split or regular shifts and those for whom driving is not their primary job.
