Efforts that would minimize distracted driving and evaluate the impact of regulations on the trucking industry are high on the list of research priorities this year for the American Transportation Research Institute, the group announced听May 2.
ATRI indicated it will examine the impact technology deployment is having to either exacerbate or reduce driver distraction. 鈥淭he research also look at the role of car driver distraction on trucking industry crash involvement,鈥 the group said.
Also, researchers will examine how to develop methodology for conducting regulatory impact analyses on industry regulations, as well as identify industry costs.
Other research priorities include, looking at ways to address the worst congestion choke points through flexibility in the federal hours of service rules, the impact e-commerce is having on the trucking industry and identifying infrastructure improvements aimed at reducing congestion.
The group鈥檚 board of directors approved the research priorities last week.
According to ATRI鈥檚 list of the country鈥檚 top bottlenecks, the five-level stack interchange in metropolitan Atlanta known as 鈥淪paghetti Junction鈥 was No. 1 on the list.听
