Delaware has opened its first truck parking spaces with idle-reduction equipment, its Department of Transportation said.

The technology installed at 24 parking spaces at the Smyra Rest Area “eliminates the need for drivers to idle their diesel engines,” DelDOT said in a statement announcing the April 19 unveiling.

The spaces feature units that truck drivers can attach to the windows of their trucks to provide heating, cooling and Internet access, the Smyrna/Clayton Sun-Times reported.

Using the units costs $2.50 per hour, the Sun-Times said.

Funding for the technology comes from a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Sun-Times said. The legislation included $1.73 million for Delaware's clean diesel program, including the idle reduction technology.
