Continued Ban on Surge Brakes Urged
Sean McNally
| Staff Reportermerican Trucking Associations and truck manufacturers opposed a federal government proposal to lift a ban on “surge brakes” for commercial vehicles. They raised questions about the surge brakes’ parking-brake capabilities.
Surge brakes are activated automatically by the forward momentum that occurs when the towing vehicle hits its brakes.Several members “have expressed their concern over the lack of parking-brake capability with surge brakes and the potential to overload the parking brake system on the towing vehicle and create a rollaway situation,” ATA said in comments filed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
