Congress Takes Action on Bills to Improve Cargo Security
Democrats Pass Recommendations of 9/11 Commission
In their first days as Congress’ new majority, Democrats on Capitol Hill introduced legislation calling for greater cargo screening and tracking of hazardous materials shipments.
“Our first and highest duty as members of this Congress is to protect the American people, to defend our homeland and to strengthen our national security,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said in a statement Jan. 9.Hoyer made his remarks after the House passed a package that included several recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, the first of a series of bills leaders have said they planned to pass in early January.
