BorgWarner, GE Locomotive Announce Layoffs

BorgWarner Turbo Systems said it is laying off 140 workers at its plant in Arden, N.C., that manufactures turbochargers for diesel trucks and construction equipment. p>The plant employs 650 and has an annual payroll of $35 million.

Also last week, locomotive manufacturer GE Transportation said it is laying off 1,550 workers, including 350 whose jobs will be cut permanently.

The company said 1,200 layoffs are lack-of-work furloughs that should end eventually. Most cuts will occur at its primary plant in Erie, Pa.
