arehouses were once thought to be the over-the-hill segment of commercial logistics, the part that would wither because of computerized freight management and expedited transportation.

But well into the modern age of just-in-time logistics, warehouses still exist. The warehouse of this era, though, is much changed from its ancestors.

Today, say the third-party logistics providers that lease and run them, contemporary warehouses are often the technologically advanced staging grounds for automotive manufacturing or the base camps for the distribu-tion of crucial components and machinery.
