Japan has raised the issue of auto tariffs with the U.S. after President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25% levy on car imports, a move that would deliver a big blow to Japan’s economy.

President Donald Trump said he would likely impose tariffs on automobile, semiconductor and pharmaceutical imports of around 25%, with an announcement coming as soon as April 2.

The move is the latest in a rapidly widening trade war as Trump delivers on his campaign pledges to institute sweeping tariffs on U.S. allies and rivals alike.
