Used Class 8 truck sales for February exceeded seasonal expectations amid strong gains for auction, wholesale and same-dealer sales.

“People are still holding on to their money,” said Charles Smith, regional business development and marketing manager at Mission Financial Services.

Used Class 8 truck sales in December regained positive momentum compared with the prior year after a slight dip ended five consecutive months of year-over-year gains.

Used Class 8 truck sales ended a run of five months of year-over-year gains in November. ACT Research reported volume slipped 1.5% to 20,400 units from 20,700 in the 2024 period.

Rush Enterprises founder and CEO W.M. “Rusty” Rush sees positive signs in the spot rate market, but don't expect a complete turnaround for trucking just yet.

Sales increased 3.8% to 24,700 units from 23,800 in the 2024 period and 9.3% from 22,600 in September, according to ACT Research data.

"August did not disappoint this year, at least from a unit volume perspective. Industry participants should interpret this as a positive sign," ACT Research Vice President Steve Tam says.

Average retail sale price increased 11.5% year over year to $62,254 from $55,819 and 2.3% sequentially from $60,830, according to ACT Research.

A used Class 8 truck cost on average $60,324 in June, 10.4% more expensive than the year-ago retail price of $54,621 and 6.2% pricier than the $56,813 reported for May.

Used Class 8 truck sales, prices and mileage faced downward pressure from uncertain market conditions during May, ACT Research reported.
