House Transportation Committee Chairman Sam Graves on Jan. 14 told colleagues he expects to schedule consideration of the bipartisan highway bill in a couple of months.

"Only a small handful of members of Congress hold a CDL, and Congressman LaMalfa spoke with pride about being a part of this elite group,” ATA President Chris Spear said.

LaMalfa was a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and he sought to repeal the 12% federal excise tax on certain commercial vehicles.

Sponsored primarily by Rep. Pat Harrigan (R-N.C.), the SAFE Drivers Act is meant to guarantee commercial drivers have a proficient understanding of English.

The aim of his agenda, Sean Duffy explained, is to further invest in freight and commuter connectivity corridors as well as expedite the completion of major infrastructure projects.

House Republicans recently took a major step in their quest to approve as early as this month a comprehensive tax and budget measure supported by the Trump White House.
