NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Technology & Maintenance Council continues to make progress on developing resources and recommended practices that expand the trucking industry’s knowledge about advanced driver-assistance systems and address technical challenges associated with deploying these technologies.

Robert Braswell, TMC’s executive director, provided an overview of the council’s efforts to support the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s ongoing , which aims to accelerate adoption of ADAS technologies to improve road safety and prevent crashes.

FMCSA initially launched TechCelerate Now in 2020 as a two-year initiative, then renewed it in 2024 with a four-year second phase of the program.

Industry awareness of the latest ADAS technologies has been increasing, Braswell said during a March 15 press conference here at TMC’s 2026 Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition.

“I think the adoption and acceptance is growing,” he said, adding that TMC is in the process of gathering data on adoption rates to quantify that trend.

The scope of ADAS also is expanding. In addition to core safety capabilities such as automatic emergency braking, collision mitigation systems, lane departure warnings and lane keeping assist, the TechCelerate Now program also is examining road-facing and driver-facing cameras, as well as camera-based vision systems that replace traditional mirrors.

Meanwhile, the performance of these systems continues to improve, Braswell said. The integration of various sensors working in concert has helped enhance accuracy and reduce false positives, he said, adding that these systems are now displaying and communicating safety information more efficiently.

“It’s an exciting time,” Braswell said, “to have these technologies helping the drivers and the fleets better manage their safety and operations.”

To help fleets evaluate the many ADAS products on the market, TechCelerate Now has updated its return-on-investment calculator to include more types of systems. Fleets can use this online tool to determine which safety technologies could suit their operations.

“This is probably one of the signature achievements of TechCelerate Now,” Braswell said.

Meanwhile, TMC continues to develop an array of recommended practices related to ADAS technologies. Braswell said the council and its study groups and task forces were on track to make significant headway on that work at this year’s annual meeting.

Examples include updated guidelines for collision warning systems, technical standards and protocols for camera monitoring systems, cybersecurity related to ADAS data messaging and optimizing driver training for ADAS and automated driving systems.

Another new recommended practice addresses the need for proper calibration of ADAS sensors when windshields must be repaired or replaced.

In addition to TMC and its parent, American Trucking Associations, other industry organizations participating in TechCelerate Now include the American Transportation Research Institute and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Foundation.
