img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>An internal Teamsters opposition group recently filed a lawsuit against the Central States Pension Fund, challenging rules that prohibit retirees from taking other jobs while collecting pension benefits.

The suit, filed by Teamsters for a Democratic Union, is part of a self-described “grassroots” campaign to pressure Central States’ trustees “to end all unreasonable restrictions on work after retirement, improve the pension benefit, reduce the cost of retiree health insurance and be more accountable to union members,” according to a statement issued by TDU’s national coordinator, Ken Paff.

Central States Executive Director Thomas Nyhan said the suit is “without merit” and that recent changes in work rules were repealed because of concern expressed by local union officials. The issue is now being studied by fund trustees, Nyhan said.
