Smarting from scads of crism lobbed by trucking executives that shippers were not playing an active role in the debate over proposed revisions to the hours-of-service regulations, the board of directors of the National Industrial Transportation League reaffirmed its opposition to the proposed changes.

The board of the Arlington, Va.-based shippers group also restated its support for legislation prohibiting the Department of Transportation from issuing a final rule before Oct. 1, 2001.

“The board reemphasized the importance of the hours-of-service issue to shippers and that shippers want to participate fully in the development of the rule,” NITL President Edward M. Emmett said.

Referring to the ban on issuing a final regulation — currently included in the Senate version of a transportation spending bill — Emmett said “we want to be assured that proposed rules don’t take effect, but we want to continue working with DOT to ensure that the final rules reflect the concerns of the marketplace.”
