NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Trailers in the future may sport small wedge-shaped edge moldings or they may be enveloped in a constant stream of compressed air or a combination of both in the attempt to improve aerodynamics and fuel economy, according to discussions held at The Maintenance Council annual meeting.

In a March 7 session on trailer aerodynamics, researchers unveiled potential designs to further reduce the aerodynamic drag on trailers.

TMC has been working with a variety of government and private groups on aerodynamics for at least 20 years, with the National Aeronautic and Space Administration conducting several research projects.

Manufacturers have been incorporating aerodynamic principles in cab designs that, combined with such other measures as engine modifications, have increased fuel mileage an average of 7 miles a gallon.
