PTG Logistics has ordered 70 SmartWay Great Dane composite-plate trailers.

PTG, Cincinnati, a provider of logistics and contract carriage services, said the California Air Resources Board has made it a requirement that 2011 and newer trailers use low-rolling-resistance tires and aerodynamic devices that generate at least 5% more fuel efficiency.

“Based on this testing and what we know about actual driving conditions, we expect to achieve a 5% overall improvement on trailers operating 100,000 miles per year from which we can generate savings of 7.5 cents per mile on every mile we run,” PTG’s CEO Roger Wellind in his statement.

Transtex Composite Inc.’s MFS trailer side skirts were chosen based on independent tests conducted in 2008 in which three configurations generated up to a 7.35% improvement in fuel efficiency. Transtex, Saint-Laurent, Quebec, makes products that make commercial vehicles more aerodynamic.

PTG Logistics joined the SmartWay Transport Partner and Affiliates Program in June 2010.
