The National Transportation Safety Board is holding a public hearing on highway safety issues raised by the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The hearing, scheduled for Oct. 20 to 22 in Los Angeles, comes as debate intensifies over widening the range in the United States of commercial truck traffic from Mexico.
Officials from the trucking industry, public advocacy groups, organized labor and the U.S., Mexican and Canadian governments are expected to testify before the NTSB. They are expected to talk about harmonizing safety standards, hours-of-service regulations, commercial driver license issues, the medical certification process and the oversight and exchange of data across the borders.
Among the speakers scheduled to appear are Raul Lopez of the Teamsters union; Refugio Munoz, representing CANACAR, the Mexican trucking association; Martin Rojas, American Trucking Associations; David Bradley, head of the Canadian Trucking Alliance; and Jerry Donaldson, Advocates for Automobile and Highway Safety, among others.
