Navistar International Corp. and Ford Motor Co. last week announced a joint venture to build medium-duty trucks at Navistar’s plant in Escobedo, Mexico. The Class 6 and 7 trucks will be marketed under both the Ford and International brand names.

The two companies will share a common chassis but feature different cab designs, said Roy Wiley, a Navistar spokesman.

“The Ford trucks will be marketed in the U.S., while the Navistar trucks, bearing the International brand, will be sold in Mexico,” he said.

n a conference call with the media, conducted Feb. 15 from Dearborn, Mich., Navistar Chairman John Horne and Ford Vice President Jim Donaldson referred to the venture as a 50-50 deal.

Navistar is to provide product design and engineering, vehicle assembly and expanded diesel engine programs. Ford will provide an undisclosed amount of capital, along with design guidance and direction.
