NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Natso Inc., a trade organization of truck stop owners, has taken sides with the trucking industry in opposing a reduction in driving hours for big rig drivers, but not all of the association’s members agree.

Several truck stop operators are licking their chops over the prospect that the Department of Transportation might cut back the allowable driving time in reforming the 65-year-old hours-of-service law. The revisions could mean more drivers making more stops at truck stops in order to comply with the rules.

However, Natso’s leadership thinks pushing for tighter restrictions may be short-sighted.

James A. Cardwell Jr., who was selected chairman at the group’s annual meeting here, said he wants truck drivers to visit members’ businesses, but that long stays may not translate to higher profits.
