Every motor carrier will have to update its MCS-150 identification report to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration every two years instead of merely filing it once when beginning business.

FMCSA said the biennial filings are mandated in the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999 and are needed to better track motor carrier safety performance, target inspections and keep up with industry trends.

The agency estimates that it adds about 4,200 carriers a month to its Motor Carrier Management Information System, which now has 525,000 entries.

American Trucking Associations said it backs the rule because it provides an extra measure of safety to all those who use the highways, said David Osiecki, ATA vice president of safety and operations.
