Illinois lawmakers responded to dizzyingly high fuel prices by suspending the state鈥檚 5% sales tax on diesel and gasoline for six months.

Gov. George Ryan called state lawmakers away from their vacations for a special one-day session of the legislature on June 29 to deal with gasoline prices approaching $2 and diesel prices not far behind.
