Daimler by Daimler Truck North America; Volvo by Volvo Group

Volvo Group and Daimler Truck are launching a joint venture to develop a software platform for heavy-duty commercial trucks that could set a new industry standard.

The two global truck manufacturers signed a binding agreement for a 50-50 partnership based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The venture aims to develop a centralized operating system that could accelerate industry innovation by separating software from hardware development cycles. This approach would allow trucks to be customized with digital features that aren’t restricted to specific applications, potentially attracting other manufacturers to adopt the platform.

“This partnership marks our commitment to drive the digital transformation of our industry,” said Daimler Truck CEO Karin Radstrom. “The software and hardware from this joint venture will be essential for achieving new levels of safety, comfort and efficiency.”

While partnering on this project, Volvo and Daimler will continue to compete in other areas, with each company developing and marketing its own products, services and digital offerings.

The project’s broader goal is to address growing demands for connectivity, safety and efficiency in commercial trucking. The platform will incorporate a high-performance control unit to manage large data volumes and enable wireless software updates. Customers will be able to add and update digital applications remotely, potentially reducing downtime and simplifying maintenance.
