perating trucks at weights equal to or greater than existing federal limits resulted in improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions, the American Transportation Research Institute said a study it conducted with engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. concluded.

“This study credibly demonstrates that there are fuel efficiency and emissions benefits that can be attributed to utilizing higher productivity vehicles,” said Rebecca Brewster, ATRI president.

Brewster said ATRI would not act on the information but would post it on its Web site and provide the report to interested parties.

“We are not engaged in recommending or advocating policy,” Brewster said. “We are strictly the providers of the research data.”
